missing photos

I lost a lot of photos a few years back and have been intermittently trying to find time to see if I can locate them anywhere on my computer. One of the things I used to be able to do was at least see thumbnails of the missing photos. Now when I open iphoto library (yes, I am using iPhoto 11 (9.2.3) and OS 10.6.8 because I don't want to do any major upgrading before finalizing my searches) I can't see the thumbnails unless I start scrolling through the photos with my mouse. As long as I scroll the thumbnails are visible, but as soon as I stop they are no longer visible. The file name for each photo is there - just can't see the image anymore. Any thoughts on this behavior?

Have you tried to repair or rebuild the iPhoto Library?

Make a backup of the library, and try all repair options, as described in this post by Old Toad:

Re: iPhoto has crashed on a number of occasions, but on 2 occasions also seems to delete several events, including the one I'm editing. When I go to reimport the last event, it shows them as already there. But I can't find them.

I'd start with repairing the permissions, then rebuilding the thumbnails:

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

Fix #1

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
